About this project

We revitalize the arts of community catering (socăcit) in the big community events from Ardeal

According to the tradition of Transylvania villages, the community caterers (socăcițele) are present to all the major events in the village life – weddings, christenings and almsgivings. Their craft – community catering (socăcitul) – is not an easy one, but it is essential for the community members meetings, because only the community caterers (socăcițele) know how to prepare a delicious food and a good plum brandy (palinca) boiled with rye (secară) that bring the joy and the wellbeing, or the devout commemoration for hundreds of guests. The bride dance, the chicken song and stuffing for godfathers, but also the sacrificing of pigs and calves for steaks, preparation of stuffed cabbages (sarmale), loafs, cakes, and bread wheels are just a few of the secrets of the gastronomic arts preserved by the community caterers (socăcițe), the arts that our project team members want to bring back to our times.

Implementing Conditions

“SOCĂCIȚELE – community caterers – keeping, promoting and creating traditional rural culinary arts” is a project implemented by Progress Foundation within the PA17/RO13 Programme “Promoting Diversity and Culture and Arts within European Cultural Heritage”, funded by the SEE 2009-2014 Financial Mechanism. The project budget is RON 65,500 and shall be implemented over 11 months (April 2015 – March 2016).

Objective

The objective of the project “SOCĂCIȚELE – Community Caterers” is to contribute to the discovery and promotion of community catering art (socăcit) of the upper Somes Valley, mainly in Feldru, Rebrisoara and Rodna villages from Bistrita-Nasaud County

Main activities:
  • Identification of active community caterers (socăcițelor) in the region;
  • Recording the community caterers’ (socăcițelor) cultural and gastronomic heritage;
  • Production of electronic publications that include recipes and specific traditions of community hosting (găzdăcitului);
  • Promotion of community caterers (socăcit) art as a form of social entrepreneurship.
  • GHEORGHE CRIȘAN - PROJECT MANAGER

    Our project addresses over 4,400 families living in the Upper Somes Valley who need anytime to organize community events but lack the financial resources needed to approach more sophisticated public catering units. You cannot get a healthy mind in a healthy body by eating McDonalds and drinking Coca Cola, even if consumed at the same time with the “chicken song”. The “home cooked chicken soup” is totally different from the “bones soup seasoned with some artificial spices”. The gas stove is totally different from the wood cooking stove. It is said that the cuisine of a specific nation is a cultural act! A huge one. All right. Will prove, by implementing this project, that the cuisine of the community caterers (socacite) from the Big Somes is not smaller, at all.

The Community Caterers and the Hope Chest

After the interviews of the previous months with the community caterers from Rodna, Feldru and Rebrișoara on the three essential festive meals in people’s life: christening, wedding and burial, we started the effective shooting of the preparation of traditional food for these three festive meals. We integrated all the shootings into a single documentary movie about the community caterers traditions.

Moreover, we organized all the materials we got during the research (traditional recipes, old and new photos, stories about the origins of the recipes) in an eBook and a documentary photo album about the community catering tradition. The album, “Community Caterers in New Times”, also includes photos from the event THE COMMUNITY CATERER OF THE UPPER SOMES VALLEY.

The Awareness Campaign on Cultural Diversity of Bistrita – Nasaud County

What would be the community caterers or the community catering, together with its tasty art, without the essences and traditions distilled from the social life of village communities? What would be the villages, without the memories of the people, the lessons lived and transmitted through generations, or the stories told to other people around the table or on the benches near the entrance? What are the meanings of the place, how is the daily life, how to tell these stories when the young people ceased to stay around the fireplace and what threads should we remember in order to get the story of the wall carpet, as a witness of the life experience of the day and night?
